Tree work in Ridgewood
Ridgewood's large Victorian and Tudor lots carry some of the biggest trees in the county: 100-year-old oaks, beeches and copper beeches, and tall white pines and spruces. The Village also has an unusually strict tree ordinance and its own Village Arborist.
Ridgewood's 8-inch threshold is lower than it sounds: almost every tree you would pay a crew for is over 8 inches. For a hazardous tree, the Licensed Tree Expert's written assessment is the key document, and the tree company you hire can usually provide it since every NJ tree company must employ one.
Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Ridgewood?
Permit required for any "qualified tree": under Chapter 260 of the Village Code, a permit from the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works is required before removing any non-invasive tree 8 inches or more in diameter at breast height anywhere in Ridgewood, and for any tree in the Village right-of-way. Removing a qualified tree generally means planting replacement trees.
Exemptions (no fee, no replacement): trees that are dead, dying or obviously diseased, or that are damaged, compromised or a hazard to structures or people, as determined by a Licensed Tree Expert and verified by the Village Arborist. Invasive species (Norway maple, tree of heaven, black locust, white mulberry, Siberian elm and others on the Village's list) are not "qualified trees" and do not need a permit. Even for an exempt tree, an application is supposed to be filed first so the exemption can be confirmed, unless it is an emergency.
Street trees and roots: work on trees in the right-of-way, and cutting roots within it, needs the Village Arborist's authorization.

Ridgewood questions
How much does tree removal cost in Ridgewood, NJ?
The same ranges as the rest of Bergen County: small trees from about $200 to $600, mature trees $500 to $2,500, and crane jobs over a house $2,500 and up, with stump grinding $100 to $500 per stump (published 2026 NJ industry figures). Ridgewood's lot sizes and access are what move a specific quote.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Ridgewood?
For most trees over the diameter threshold, yes, or at minimum a notice or application. The rules are summarized above with the Borough's contact; dead and hazardous trees are usually handled faster. Street trees always belong to the town.
Are the tree companies licensed?
